Whether you're looking to get started quickly with a new online business solution or to complement your existing solution with more collaboration tools, search engine giant
Google offers small businesses a variety of applications through its Google Apps (google.com/a/smallbiz/) solution.
Google's hosted business applications is a topic that has been discussed quite a bit in the Web hosting industry as of late, especially with the rise in demand and popularity of hosted applications in general and its arguable virtues over desktop applications. The thing that makes Google Apps attractive to many is that it's all hosted by Google, so there's no hardware or software to download, install or maintain, you can get it up and running quickly even if you don't have an IT staff and Google provides you with around-the-clock assistance should you have any issues. Google will even help you register your own domain name if you haven't done that yet.
The tools Google Apps offers to small businesses falls into three categories: communicate and connect, collaborate and publish and manage your services.
Under the first category, you can sign up for a customized email account with your own domain name, like jsmith@your-company.com, that comes with mail search and calendar tools as well as integrated chat. You also have access to Google Talk that lets your users call or send instant messages to their contacts around the world for free, and includes file sharing and voicemail. Then there's Google Calendar, that lets you coordinate meetings and company events with sharable calendars you can publish on the Web.
The collaboration tools let your employees easily create, share and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets and presentations in real time within a Web browser window using Google Docs. Users can also take advantage of their own Start Page where they can access their inbox, calendar, docs and company info, plus search from the Web, from one location. There is also the Page Creator application that enables users to create and publish Web pages using a WYSIWYG site builder tool.
You also get access to a control panel to manage your domain and user accounts online, which Google says, is also highly customizable. So, you can upload custom logos to be displayed in place of the standard Google product logos and you can also modify the color scheme for the pages where your users sign into their services. With the premier edition, you also have the option to integrate with existing IT systems and with third party solutions.
Google Apps Premier Edition costs $50 per account per year and comes with 25GB of email storage, the option to remove text-based ads in the email GUI and 99.9 percent uptime as described in the company's terms of service. You can also sign up for Google Apps standard edition, which is free of charge.
